Short answer: IPL needs dark hair on lighter skin. If your hair is grey, white, red or very light blonde it will not work, and if your skin is very deep it is not safe. Your IPL skin tone and hair colour decide your result far more than the device does.

This is the question people ask last, and it should be the question they ask first.

Does IPL work on every skin tone and hair colour?

No. Not even close.

IPL works by firing light that gets absorbed by melanin, the dark pigment in your hair. That light becomes heat, travels down the hair, and damages the follicle.

Two things have to be true for that to work safely.

Your hair needs enough pigment to absorb the light. No pigment, nothing absorbs, nothing happens.

Your skin needs less pigment than your hair. The light has to pass through your skin to reach the hair. If your skin holds more pigment than the hair does, your skin absorbs the energy instead.

That second point is the whole safety story. It is not a marketing limitation. It is physics, and it is why the IPL skin tone charts on device boxes exist.

How your IPL skin tone decides the outcome

Picture the light as looking for something dark to land on.

On pale skin with dark hair, the hair is the only dark thing around. All the energy goes exactly where you want it.

On deep skin with dark hair, the skin and the hair are competing for the same light. The skin is right at the surface, so it gets there first.

Heat in your skin instead of your follicle is not a weaker result. It is a burn.

Why deeper IPL skin tones are excluded from home devices

This is not caution for its own sake. It is documented.

StatPearls states plainly that “the risk of postprocedural hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation is higher in patients with Fitzpatrick skin types IV through VI.”

In plain English, that means patches of skin going darker or lighter than the skin around them, and it can last a long time.

The other named risks are epidermal thermal injury, which is a burn to the surface layer, and scarring.

Here is the important part though. Deeper skin is not excluded from laser hair removal, only from most home IPL.

The same source explains why: “longer-wavelength lasers are recommended. Deeper penetration of the laser allows for an increased ratio of the temperature of the hair bulb to the temperature of the epidermis.”

A longer wavelength travels past the pigment in your skin and delivers its heat further down, at the follicle. Clinics also use lower fluences, longer pulse durations and epidermal cooling to protect the surface.

Which hair colours does IPL work on?

Your IPL skin tone gets all the attention, but hair colour is just as decisive and far less discussed.

  • Black and dark brown. Ideal. Maximum pigment, best absorption, best results.
  • Medium and dark blonde. Works, usually more slowly and with more sessions.
  • Light blonde. Poor. Often not worth the money.
  • Red. Does not work. Red hair gets its colour from a different pigment that barely absorbs this light.
  • Grey and white. Does not work at all. There is no pigment left to absorb anything.

No device fixes this, at any price. If a brand tells you their handset works on grey or red hair, they are describing something the technology cannot do.

For grey, white or red hair, electrolysis is the usual answer. It destroys follicles one at a time with a fine probe and does not care what colour the hair is.

Two extra things that catch people out.

A tan changes your answer temporarily. Fresh sun or fake tan raises the pigment in your skin, which raises the risk. Wait for it to fade before treating.

Skip tattoos and dark moles entirely. Both are concentrated pigment, and both will absorb far more heat than the skin around them.

Does IPL work on a dark IPL skin tone?

Most home IPL devices are not suitable beyond Fitzpatrick type IV. Melanin in the skin absorbs light meant for the hair, and StatPearls notes the risk of post-procedural hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation is higher in skin types IV to VI. Clinic laser using long-pulsed Nd:YAG is the safer route.

Does IPL work on blonde hair?

On darker blonde, slowly and with more sessions. On light blonde, usually not well enough to justify the cost. IPL needs pigment in the hair to absorb the light, and light blonde has very little.

Does IPL work on grey or white hair?

Never. Tattoo ink is dense pigment and will absorb a large amount of heat. Work around tattoos and dark moles, leaving a clear margin.
